Smith sent an emissary, Lucien Woodworth, to Sam Houston in Austin during
March 1844 to investigate the possibility of purchasing territory in
the Texas Republic to create a nation in southwest Texas as a buffer
between Texas and Mexico and a place for the Church to exist unmolested.
Brother Woodworth was likely the first Mormon in the Texas area. Read
